Pat has performed with such legendary musicians as Oscar Peterson\, Joe Henderson\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Herb Ellis\, Jimmy Cobb and Lee Konitz. He has also performed with legendary Canadian musicians as Moe Koffman\, Rob McConnell\, Ed Bickert\, Peter Appleyard and Don Thompson. \nIn January 2020\, Pat released his second album as a leader with a trio featuring two of Canada’s premier jazz musicians\, Tom Szczesniak on accordion and Reg Schwager on guitar. The album is called\, “Time Well Spent” and has received rave reviews. The album was included on Jazz FM’s Top 25 jazz albums of 2020\, and Jazz FM personality Heather Bambrick said the players “form a powerhouse trio. DESCRIPTION:Venue: The Gasworks Outdoor Stage (141 Park St N\, Hamilton) \nPrice: FREE \n  \nAbout Paulo Leon: \nRecently coming off his latest album “Partly Stabilized Partly Curious” (PSPC) and single “Chicken Little”\, Paulo Leon is an artist\, poet\, musician\, producer and rapper who is unwilling to fit the mold within the evolving musical landscape. Born and raised in Hamilton\, Ontario\, Paulo is  known for his melodic innovative production and exceptional lyricism. His artistic roots began in the Hamilton spoken word scene\, as he led his high school team to place first in the largest spoken word competition in Canada\, “Louder than a Bomb Canada” (2017). During this time and after\, he not only tightened his skills as a writer but also as a producer\, and began crafting his post-hip-hop sound\, which is rooted in soul\, r&b and pop-jazz fusion. Currently\, Paulo’s focus is incorporating hardware and live instrumentation to blend genres and push the mainstream forward. Through his music\, he hopes to convey a sense of escapism for his audience by exposing his truest self and the world that surrounds him. At only 21 years old\, he writes\, composes\, arranges and produces all of his work. The band was originally formed as an acoustic duo in Scotland\, where Alexandria Shankland and Philip James performed across the UK before making their way to Canada. DESCRIPTION:Venue: The Gasworks Outdoor Stage (141 Park St N\, Hamilton) \nPrice: FREE \n  \nAbout Luke Lalonde: \nLuke Lalonde is the lead singer of JUNO-nominated indie-rock mainstays\, Born Ruffians. Alongside the band’s 5 full-length records\, Lalonde has become known as a prolific solo writer\, collaborating with a variety of artists across several genres\, including Caribou. In 2012\, he released his debut solo effort\, Rhythymnals. That album found Lalonde exploring a more electro-indie space\, moving from his signature New Wave howl to a more echoey\, crooning pure-pop sensibility. The release was met with notable acclaim\, with critics drawing attention to the impressive breadth of Lalonde’s creative capacity. \nIn the seven year gap between his debut and sophomore releases\, Lalonde wrote and recorded two collaborative albums that he shelved. “I wanted to make something that represents me entirely. The sound of this record sort of found me while I was writing songs in Brooklyn when I started playing around with different ways to record myself. Every song on this album is near and dear to me. I’m extremely proud of it.” \nHis latest LP\, The Perpetual Optimist\, was released on November 22\, 2019 via Paper Bag Records. The album finds the singer writing more in the vein of Americana greats like John Prine\, Roger Miller\, and Kris Kristofferson; with nods to 60’s pop of Jacques Dutronc\, and the Kinks. It is a record shaped as much by his own musical upbringing as it is by the frenetic world around him. He writes with a more pointed perspective than ever\, addressing 2019’s most pressing issues: the escalating threat of climate change\, connection in the face of manic uncertainty\, and mortality. The Perpetual Optimist is Luke Lalonde’s most mature and confident work to date. \nAbout F.R.I.E (Fort Rose Imagined Ensemble) \nThe Fort Rose Imagined Ensemble is composed of Annie Shaw\, Connor Bennett\, Dan Edmonds\, Aaron Hutchinson and Joel Banks. Great arrangements that keep the integrity of Joni’s tunes but makes them sound fresh and new. Also the laid-back and confident vocal approach from Mandy that makes this recording very strong.” \nBrad Barker – JAZZ FM 91.1 \nMandy Lagan has been a singer/band leader since 1989. She has consistently pursued her desire to present songs creatively\, uniquely and intelligently with the intention of conveying to her listeners the heart felt message that lives within. She has recorded four CDs since 2002. The songs span a wide range of material\, from jazz standards\, to original compositions to songs of Joni Mitchell. She was awarded funding for her “Verses” project from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Ontario Arts Council. She has performed in various festivals and venues in Ontario with some of Canada’s most outstanding jazz musicians. She has also been teaching music since 1984\, at Mohawk College until 1995 and privately to date. \nAfter 30 years in Toronto Mandy has returned to Hamilton where she continues her teaching\, writing\, recording and performing. \nTHE JONI BOOK was heralded as one of the top 20 CDs of 2018 by Jazz FM 91\, where it receives regular airplay. It has also been featured on CBC Radio’s “Jazz with Laila Biali”. The press has praised Mandy’s imaginative arrangements\, and her earnest\, stunning vocals. She has truly made these songs her own\, while honouring the stories\, melodies and harmonies that make Joni’s music so powerful. The result is a wonderfully mature collection of playful and creative arrangements that clearly come straight from the heart. \nTHE PAUL SIMON PROJECT is the most recent endeavour for Mandy and her band\, ORIGINS. Her work as a pianist and composer reflects her view of the times we live in – at times intense\, at times poignant\, at times cerebral. Her most recent recording as leader is ‘Til Now Is Secret (Addo Records). Showcasing ten of her original compositions\, the recording features multi-reed player Shirantha Beddage\, guitarist Ted Quinlan\, bassist Kieran Overs and drummer Ethan Ardelli\, and was made possible with the help of the Ontario Arts Council. \nNancy has been recognized Canada-wide. Winner of the 2008 National Jazz Awards Keyboardist Of The Year Award and the 2003 Montréal International Jazz Festival’s prestigious Grand Prix de Jazz\, Nancy has several previous discs as leader to her credit. \nHer debut\, Invitation\, was released in 1997\, and was voted one of the year’s best by Jazz Canadiana reviewers. Toronto Star critic Geoff Chapman named Luminosity (2000) one of the top jazz recordings of that year. Levitation\, Nancy’s third recording (2003)\, was “a fine example of the modern jazz musician’s art” according to the Globe & Mail’s Mark Miller. When She Dreams was released in 2004 on Canada’s premier jazz label\, Justin Time Records\, and shot to the number one position on Canadian campus radio jazz charts. \nIn 2005\, Nancy and her quartet (featuring saxophonist Kirk MacDonald\, bassist Kieran Overs and drummer Barry Romberg) toured the Canadian jazz festivals. That same year Nancy was nominated in four categories at Canada’s National Jazz Awards. In 2006\, Nancy’s recording Rainy Days and Mondays (Somerset/Universal) was nominated for a JUNO award in the “Instrumental Album Of The Year” category. She was also among the Keyboardist Of The Year nominees at the 2006 and 2007 National Jazz Awards. His professional career began as a cellist at the age of 15 and transitioned to flute\, clarinet\, and saxophone during his studies at McMaster University (BMus 1978). While pursuing jazz studies at the University of Miami he performed with Henry Mancini\, BB King\, Aretha Franklin\, Tony Bennett\, Mel Tormé and many others (MMUS 1980). Moving to New York City in 1983 he studied composition and saxophone at New York University with Lee Konitz and Bob Mintzer. During his second residency in New York from 1996 to 2005\, Hepner toured with Blood\, Sweat and Tears\, played in Broadway and Off-Broadway shows and in clubs with such artists as Buster Poindexter\, Tom Wopat and the Ed Palermo Big Band. \nSince 2008 he has recorded and performed with Tom Wilson (musician) and LeE HARVeY OsMOND as both a woodwind player and conductor/arranger for his symphony shows which have included performances with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. \nIn 2015\, he collaborated with Canadian musician Ian Thomas as arranger and conductor to develop a concert for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. The music for the concert was used to produce Thomas’s “Life In Song” recording. \nHepner taught at Berklee College of Music (Boston) 1985–89\, and was founder and head of the Music Program at Selkirk College in Nelson\, BC\, 1989–96. This collaborative project is an opportunity for both artists to “reimagine” their compositions for this chamber jazz instrumentation\, shining new perspective on their existing repertoire. This 9-piece chord-less ensemble utilizes its seven horns as both melodic and harmonic devices\, anchored by bass and drums. \nThe Carn Davidson 9’s unique sound is made stronger by an all-star lineup of prominent Canadian artists who are all exceptional ensemble players as well as outstanding soloists. In 2014\, CD9 released their debut\, NINE\, which was nominated for a 2014 JUNO-nominated debut recording. In 2017\, CD9 released their follow-up recording entitled Murphy\, which was also nominated for a 2017 JUNO Award. Since 2013\, Payadora has self-produced two albums and has developed a loyal following across Canada\, balancing a combination of virtuosity and creativity with stylistic accuracy\, and featuring some of the most respected chamber musicians in Canada. Their broad scope in repertoire draws from the height of Buenos Aires’ tango tradition\, including compositions by De Caro\, Pugliese\, Troilo\, and Salgan\, to the masterful\, contemporary sounds of Astor Piazzolla and beyond. Drawing from eclectic backgrounds in Classical\, Jazz\, Latin\, Eastern European folk music\, and improvisation\, Payadora’s performances exude technical virtuosity\, playful spontaneity\, and rhythmic vitality. \nTheir recordings are played regularly on Jazz FM’s Cafe Latino and Classical 96.3. The Argentinean Consulate in Toronto has endorsed Payadora’s skill and authenticity at recreating the musical aesthetic of that country by producing a video featuring the group in interviews and live performances. Payadora is also the featured ensemble in the 2019 documentary “The Sounds of Canada: Argentina\,” part of a three-season series produced by ECG Productions (Ethnic Channels Group) exploring the variety and performers of diverse ethnic music in Canada. \nHighlights from Payadora’s past performances include sold-out shows at Ottawa Chamberfest\, Indian River Music Festival in PEI\, St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts\, Harbourfront Centre\, Toronto Music Festival\, the Lula Lounge\, the Jazz Bistro\, the TD Toronto Jazz Festival\, and for the Canadian Opera Company’s World Music Series at the Four Seasons Centre. The personnel includes bandleader Sundar Viswanathan (saxophones\, flute\, vocals)\, Felicity Williams (vocals)\, Michael Occhipinti (guitar)\, Justin Gray (bass)\, Ravi Naimpally (tablas) and Max Senitt (drums and percussion). Special guests on the most recent\, sophomore album\, Worldview\, include Aaron Lightstone (oud) and Todd Pentney (piano\, Fender Rhodes\, synth). \nWorldview was released on Oct. 29\, 2021 to critical acclaim\, and won a 2022 JUNO award (Canadian GRAMMY) for Best Jazz Album (Group). The music is inspired by the deep musical traditions of India\, Africa and Brazil\, rooted within the framework of modern jazz. In an innovative marriage of ancient and modern\, driving grooves intersect with cinematic atmospheres and soaring melodies\, creating a fresh\, emotive sonic experience. Bandmembers share an eclectic range of musical expertise – hardbop\, pop\, rock\, electronica\, free improvisation\, world and R&B/Soul filter into the interpretations of the tunes. Petal\, Avataar’s debut CD (2016) received critical acclaim from publications including DOWNBEAT\, JAZZIZ\, allaboutjazz and worldmusiccentral.com. Production of both albums and upcoming live video was generously supported with grants from Ontario and Canada Arts Councils. \nThe band’s original compositions are informed by artists including Shakti\, Jarrett\, Oregon\, Jan Garbarek\, Jobim\, Robert Glasper\, Snarky Puppy\, Kenny Garrett and Ornette Coleman\, and at their core are imbued with an intent toward political and social change and a spiritual focus that transcends the sound. While Avataar’s debut album\, Petal\, explored the evanescence of human life and was a call for a return to spiritual connectedness\, Worldview attempts to also present a musical commentary on the state of our world\, on the pandemic and on the inability of our leaders to lead with integrity\, honesty and compassion. While the actions of our leaders affected so many\, some of the songs started as gut responses to the treatment of children\, our most valuable and vulnerable citizens\, and act as vehicles of catharsis for the composer. \nAvataar has been making original music together for over 10 years\, and continues to develop an Ntl/Intl reputation. The band’s performance record includes the Guelph\, Sudbury\, Markham and Brampton Jazz Festivals\, Lula Lounge\, Trane Studio\, several universities and colleges in Ontario\, Hugh’s Room\, the Small World Centre\, the Emmett Ray\, and other venues. In 2018 Avataar successfully toured South Africa\, playing in venues ranging from intimate jazz clubs to universities and concert halls. This tour took the band through Cape Town\, Kalk Bay\, Durban\, Johannesburg and Pretoria. Most recently\, a tour of Western Canada helped develop a national profile through performances to enthusiastic audiences in BC\, AB and SK (Penticton\, Revelstoke\, Canmore\, Saskatoon\, Regina\, Calgary\, Nelson and Cranbrook).
