Find them in the Hamilton Farmer’s Market. \nAbout Darcy Hepner \nBorn in Edmonton\, Alberta and raised in Hamilton\, Ontario\, he is the son of professional musicians (conductor Lee Hepner and pianist Patricia Rolston). His professional career began as a cellist at the age of 15 and transitioned to flute\, clarinet\, and saxophone during his studies at McMaster University (BMus 1978). While pursuing jazz studies at the University of Miami he performed with Henry Mancini\, BB King\, Aretha Franklin\, Tony Bennett\, Mel Tormé and many others (MMUS 1980). Moving to New York City in 1983 he studied composition and saxophone at New York University with Lee Konitz and Bob Mintzer. During his second residency in New York from 1996 to 2005\, Hepner toured with Blood\, Sweat and Tears\, played in Broadway and Off-Broadway shows and in clubs with such artists as Buster Poindexter\, Tom Wopat and the Ed Palermo Big Band. \nSince 2008 he has recorded and performed with Tom Wilson (musician) and LeE HARVeY OsMOND as both a woodwind player and conductor/arranger for his symphony shows which have included performances with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. \nIn 2015\, he collaborated with Canadian musician Ian Thomas as arranger and conductor to develop a concert for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. The music for the concert was used to produce Thomas’s “Life In Song” recording. \nHepner taught at Berklee College of Music (Boston) 1985–89\, and was founder and head of the Music Program at Selkirk College in Nelson\, BC\, 1989–96. From 2005 to 2020\, he held the position of professor of music at Mohawk College\, Hamilton \n— \nShowcasing top Canadian and international musicians in jazz\, blues\, and improvised music. His harmonic simpatico and unerring sense of time\, have kept him in the foreground of the jazz picture.” – Renee Rosnes\, five-time JUNO award winner\, Artistic Director of Oscar Peterson International Jazz Festival \nBio: Toronto-based and Winnipeg-born multiple award-winning bassist and composer Dave Young\, is\, without a doubt\, one of Canada’s most valuable and beloved musical exports. Whether he’s performing as part of a classical symphony\, or as an integral member of an iconic jazz trio (with the likes of the late Oscar Peterson)\, or leading any of his dynamic ensembles\, Dave remains a total musician\, with artistic soul in abundance. He first began studying the guitar and violin at age ten\, but a turn of events at his first gig (a University dance band) compelled him to pick up the bass. Equally comfortable in the worlds of orchestral classical music and jazz\, Dave is a multiple threat. As a classical musician\, he has been a member of The Edmonton Symphony\, The Winnipeg Symphony and The Hamilton Philharmonic. As a jazz artist\, he is a chameleon-like bassist\, who often shines brightest in collaborative efforts with other musicians. Because of his technical skill\, few bassists (jazz or otherwise) are able to dig in\, swing hard and still render a lyrical arco solo as Dave can. \nOne of Dave Young’s most beloved gigs was a five year stint (1961-66) as a member of iconic jazz guitarist Lenny Breau’s quartet. Recently\, Randy Bachman’s “Guitar Archives” label has released Bourbon Street – a LIVE recording of Dave and Lenny in duo format\, digitally restored and originally recorded on a primitive reel to reel at Toronto’s late\, lamented jazz venue. It was included in Rolling Stone‘s and Vibe‘s lists of best albums of all time. Getz/Gilberto was widely acclaimed by music critics\, who praised Gilberto’s vocals and the album’s bossa nova groove and minimalism. Getz/Gilberto received Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Instrumental Album\, Individual or Group and Best Engineered Recording – Non-Classical; it also became the first non-American album to win Album of the Year\, in 1965. The record features Stan Getz\, João Gilberto\, Antônio Carlos Jobim\, Sebastião Neto\, Milton Banana\, and Astrud Gilberto. \nJazzTimes declared it\, “essential for all serious jazz collections…served as proof that it is possible for music to be both artistically and commercially successful…this relatively sparse setting with the great Getz perfectly fit the music\, resulting in a true gem.” Vibe listed it as one of the 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century. It was listed by Rolling Stone Brazil as one of the 100 best Brazilian albums in history. The album was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001. \nAbout Pat LaBarbera: \nPat LaBarbera\, saxophonist\, flutist\, clarinetist\, composer\, jazz educator was born in Mt. Morris\, New York and spent the first thirty years of his life in the United States before moving to Toronto in 1974. His father taught the basics of music to Pat and his two younger brothers\, John (a gifted arranger/trumpeter) and Joe (a highly accomplished drummer). He studied at the famed Berklee College of Music\, and soon after graduating\, began to make his presence felt with the best of the American big bands. \nBy the time he relocated to Toronto\, Ontario\, Canada 1974\, Pat LaBarbera was already well-known for his solo work with the bands of Louis Bellson\, Woody Herman\, and for seven years\, touring and recording as featured tenor saxophone soloist with the Buddy Rich Band throughout every major city in the U.S.\, Europe\, and Japan. Universally considered one of the world’s most exciting saxophonists. \nLaBarbera has performed and recorded consistently with Elvin Jones since 1975\, appearing at premier jazz festivals all over the world. After a brief hiatus\, he rejoined Elvin Jones’ ‘Time Machine’ in 2001 to perform and tour North America\, Britain. Europe\, and Japan for the next two years. Describing LaBarbera’s phenomenal talent\, Elvin Jones said\, “Pat has tremendous musical ability beyond technical facility. He has great power of concentration to detail and is totally committed with body and soul.” \nLaBarbera has played on every major network television show including The Ed Sullivan Show and Johnny Carson’s Tonight Show several times. He has worked with the biggest entertainers in the business including Frank Sinatra\, Tony Bennett\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Ella Fitzgerald\, Chick Corea\, Woody Shaw\, and McCoy Tyner. \nPat LaBarbera has been among the key members of the Toronto jazz scene for the past three-plus decades\, claiming Junos and ‘Jazz Report’ Awards for writing and performing with his own jazz ensembles all along the way. Grove Music Online describes his legacy as at least fourfold: as a pioneer of hard bop; as a user of what became the archetypal quintet instrumentation of tenor saxophone\, trumpet\, piano\, bass\, and drums; as a developer of young musicians who went on to become important players and bandleaders; and for his skill as a composer and arranger. \nSilver was also an influence as a pianist: his first Blue Note recording as leader “redefined the jazz piano\, which up until then was largely modeled on the dexterity and relentless attack of Bud Powell”\, in Myers’ words. As early as 1956\, Silver’s piano playing was described by Down Beat as “a key influence on a large segment of modern jazz pianists.” This went on to include Ramsey Lewis\, Les McCann\, Bobby Timmons\, and Cecil Taylor\, who was impressed by Silver’s aggressive style. \nSilver’s legacy as a composer may be greater than as a pianist\, because his works\, many of which are jazz standards\, continue to be performed and recorded worldwide. As a composer\, he led a return to an emphasis on melody\, observed critic John S. Wilson: for a long time\, jazz musicians had written contrafacts of great technical complexity\, but “Silver wrote originals that were not only actually original but memorably melodic\, presaging a gradual return to melodic creativity among writing jazzmen.” \nAbout Tim Clarke: \nA versatile and expressive musician\, Buffalo\, NY-based trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn player Tim Clarke performs and records with a wide array of creative\, jazz-oriented groups throughout Western New York and it’s surrounding areas. A creditable performer of modern styles of improvisational music\, Tim is a noted practitioner of “Chicago-style” traditional jazz\, having developed a love for this music which goes back to the Chicago recordings of Louis Armstrong in the 1920s. In 2020\, Tim was recipient of JazzBuffalo’s “John Hunt Jazz Musician of the Year”. A native of Eugene Oregon\, Tim received his BA and MA from the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance in 1993. All ages event. \nBeer garden \nOutdoor Stage at The HMC Centre for Performance and Education (The Gasworks\, 141 Park St N\, Hamilton) \nChairs Provided \n  \nThe series is co-curated by members of the HMC and the HPO with the goal to bring vibrant\, accessible musical performances to the downtown community. \nMade possible with the support of Ontario Creates.  \n  \nAbout Darcy Hepner: \nBorn in Edmonton\, Alberta and raised in Hamilton\, Ontario\, he is the son of professional musicians (conductor Lee Hepner and pianist Patricia Rolston). His professional career began as a cellist at the age of 15 and transitioned to flute\, clarinet\, and saxophone during his studies at McMaster University (BMus 1978). While pursuing jazz studies at the University of Miami he performed with Henry Mancini\, BB King\, Aretha Franklin\, Tony Bennett\, Mel Tormé and many others (MMUS 1980). Moving to New York City in 1983 he studied composition and saxophone at New York University with Lee Konitz and Bob Mintzer. During his second residency in New York from 1996 to 2005\, Hepner toured with Blood\, Sweat and Tears\, played in Broadway and Off-Broadway shows and in clubs with such artists as Buster Poindexter\, Tom Wopat and the Ed Palermo Big Band. \nSince 2008 he has recorded and performed with Tom Wilson (musician) and LeE HARVeY OsMOND as both a woodwind player and conductor/arranger for his symphony shows which have included performances with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa. \nIn 2015\, he collaborated with Canadian musician Ian Thomas as arranger and conductor to develop a concert for the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. The music for the concert was used to produce Thomas’s “Life In Song” recording. \nHepner taught at Berklee College of Music (Boston) 1985–89\, and was founder and head of the Music Program at Selkirk College in Nelson\, BC\, 1989–96. From 2005 to 2020\, he held the position of professor of music at Mohawk College\, Hamilton.

The duo presents thoughtfully curated programs\,\ninspired by their deep well of collective musical interests and personal cultural heritages. Their repertoire draws from a rich variety including masterworks from the Western Classical repertoire\, Irish fiddle\, Argentine Tango\, and music with South Asian influences.\nPassionate about music education\, the duo has presented concerts and workshops to elementary and high schools in Southern Ontario\, and each maintains an active private teaching studio. The Tadioli Duo are frequent performers on the Chamber Music Mississauga roster\, performing concerts both in person and virtually since the duo’s inception. \nwww.tadioliduo.com \nAbout Suhashini Arulanandam: \nSuhashini Arulanandam is a member of The Oscar Peterson School of Music faculty\, teaching private violin lessons. She also teaches violin in the Oscar Peterson Program\, founded in 2022. \nSuhashini brings a full and varied musical life to her teaching studio. She has spent over 20 years working as an orchestral and chamber musician. She is deeply committed to transmitting string pedagogy through an anatomically accurate lens\, and admits a healthy addiction to Dounis exercises. She is dedicated to helping violinists grow their musical skills in a holistic and healthy way\, including developing deliberate practice strategies and managing expectations. \nSuhashini has taught and coached for over 25 years. She is a violin coach for the Hamilton Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and the Regional String Program at Port Credit Secondary School\, and has been a visiting coach for several other youth orchestras. She has developed and/or presented numerous educational performances and workshops for schools in the Peel\, Halton\, and York Region District school board\, as an individual as well as in collaboration with other groups and organizations. \nSuhashini is a longtime member of the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and the Windsor Symphony Orchestra. She is in demand in the Toronto music scene\, performing frequently with the Esprit Orchestra\, Thin Edge New Music Collective\, Soundstreams\, Arraymusic\, Tapestry Opera\, and most recently the Montreal-based Ensemble Obiora. A member of the 7-piece tango band\, Solidaridad\, Suhashini has performed in Buenos Aires\, Brooklyn\, and Portland as well as locally with organizations such as the Stratford Summer Music and the Chamber Music Society of Mississauga. She performs frequently with cellist Sybil Shanahan as the Tadioli Duo\, introducing audiences to new and richly impactful voices such as Andalusian composer-violinist Yardani Torres Maiani\, Jessie Montgomery\, and Reena Esmail\, as well as drawing from the cherished repertoire of the Western Classical canon. As a recording artist\, Suhashini can be heard on the Naxos and Centrediscs labels including the Aradia Ensemble’s Juno-nominated Vivaldi: Sacred Music\, Vol. IV\, as well as on Solidaridad Tango’s debut album DISTANCIA\, Sarah Slean’s Metaphysics\, and Tapestry Opera’s Rocking Horse Winner. These have been broadcast on CBC Radio 1 and 2\, Jazz.FM91\, and La 2X4 FM 92.7 Buenos Aires. \n  \nAbout Sybil Shanahan: \nCellist Sybil Shanahan has played the cello for as long as she can remember.  A contemporary performer comfortable across many musical styles\, Sybil runs her own event music business Beaux Strings for which she is a published music arranger of several pops songs for string ensembles.  A travel lover\, Sybil’s lifelong commitment to the cello and the medium of chamber music has provided her with the opportunities to perform around the world\, including much of Canada\, USA\, Europe\, Argentina and South Africa to date.  Between 2010-2020\, she performed and recorded extensively with Ensemble Vivant\, “Canada’s chamber music treasure” (Toronto Star). Her debut album\, Caprice\, was released in 2014 and features several previously unrecorded French Romantic cello duos with Coenraad Bloemendal. \nSybil manages a full private teaching studio for adult cellists is based in Toronto\, and she has been on faculty at Lake Field Music Camp since 2012. As a freelance performer\, she has joined orchestras across Ontario. When not involved in musical pursuits\, she can often be found on her paddle board\, skis or bike\, or tending to her spoiled cats. Sybil completed her University education in Europe. She holds a Master’s Degree from the class of cello soloist Patrick Demenga in Switzerland and a Bachelor from the class of Gregor Horsch in Amsterdam.

It doesn’t take long for waves of iridescent guitar chords\, lush keyboard improvisations\, and the band’s wild and groovy vibe to sweep a room. As sincere as they are beguiling\, Junestone’s music is ear-catching\, memorable\, and at times delightfully outrageous. The band features Borys Franiczek on guitars\, Ian Aisling on keyboards\, Olivia Brown on bass and vocals\, and Justin McHugh on drums. \nJunestone’s music is psychedelic and often alludes to themes of self-realization\, assertiveness\, and vision. Smitten with jazz and rock as they are\, the band’s playing is routinely inspired by America’s Classical Music and 90’s alternative hits alike. Junestone is consistently influenced by music from everywhere\, but their song- writing ingenuity owes it all to American music legends like Charles Mingus\, James Brown\, and Erykah Badu. \nThe band began in the summer of 2018 when Olivia devised a band practice with three of her dear friends: Ian\, Justin\, and Borys. She had written three new songs and was ready to put them together. One of these songs\, “Who Cares”\, would be the band’s first single less than a year later. Since then\, the band has released seven singles. As time has passed\, writing has become a more collective endeavour. The band’s repertoire has now expanded to include dozens of originals. \nEach band member has studied jazz performance in the GTA. Borys is a graduate of York University’s Music program while Justin studied at Humber College. Both Ian and Olivia are graduates of Mohawk College’s music program. Ian currently works as a composer and has written music for two CBC documentaries\, The Last Guide and Road to Roxham. Justin is a regular performer on the Toronto music scene and has played with Brownman Ali and Juno award-winning musician Donné Roberts among others. Borys has attended California Brazil Camp and like Olivia\, works as a private music teacher in the Hamilton area. Olivia has attended the Banff Centre as a musician in residence (Winter 2018) and was nominated as an emerging artist for three consecutive years at the Hamilton Arts Awards (2017-2019).  \nJunestone’s performance experience includes T.U. Jazz Fest 2020 and Ontario Place Summer Live Music Festival 2021 and 2022. They have also played various events at Royal Botanical Gardens including SummerTide 2023 and both WinterTide 2022 and 2023. Upcoming performances for Junestone include Markham Village Music Festival 2023\, Hamilton’s Music on the Waterfront 2023\, and Markham’s DTM Music Fest in September.
