Find them in the Hamilton Farmer’s Market. \nExploring pioneer jazz pianist Horace Silver’s lesser known compositions such as Calcutta Cutie\, Cherry Blossom\, Mexican Hip Dance\, That Healing’ Feelin’\, Where You At?\, and Love Vibrations. \nAbout Horace Silver: \nHorace Silver was among the most influential jazz musicians of his lifetime. Grove Music Online describes his legacy as at least fourfold: as a pioneer of hard bop; as a user of what became the archetypal quintet instrumentation of tenor saxophone\, trumpet\, piano\, bass\, and drums; as a developer of young musicians who went on to become important players and bandleaders; and for his skill as a composer and arranger. \nSilver was also an influence as a pianist: his first Blue Note recording as leader “redefined the jazz piano\, which up until then was largely modeled on the dexterity and relentless attack of Bud Powell”\, in Myers’ words. As early as 1956\, Silver’s piano playing was described by Down Beat as “a key influence on a large segment of modern jazz pianists.” This went on to include Ramsey Lewis\, Les McCann\, Bobby Timmons\, and Cecil Taylor\, who was impressed by Silver’s aggressive style. \nSilver’s legacy as a composer may be greater than as a pianist\, because his works\, many of which are jazz standards\, continue to be performed and recorded worldwide. As a composer\, he led a return to an emphasis on melody\, observed critic John S. Wilson: for a long time\, jazz musicians had written contrafacts of great technical complexity\, but “Silver wrote originals that were not only actually original but memorably melodic\, presaging a gradual return to melodic creativity among writing jazzmen.” \nAbout Tim Clarke: \nA versatile and expressive musician\, Buffalo\, NY-based trumpet/cornet/flugelhorn player Tim Clarke performs and records with a wide array of creative\, jazz-oriented groups throughout Western New York and it’s surrounding areas. A creditable performer of modern styles of improvisational music\, Tim is a noted practitioner of “Chicago-style” traditional jazz\, having developed a love for this music which goes back to the Chicago recordings of Louis Armstrong in the 1920s. In 2020\, Tim was recipient of JazzBuffalo’s “John Hunt Jazz Musician of the Year”. A native of Eugene Oregon\, Tim received his BA and MA from the University of Oregon School of Music and Dance in 1993. Tim’s fruitful relationship with the Oregon Festival of American Music goes back 25 years\, first as a charter member of the Emerald City Jazz Kings\, and later a featured guest soloist. \n— \nShowcasing top Canadian and international musicians in jazz\, blues\, and improvised music. Find them in the Hamilton Farmer’s Market. \nAbout Diana Panton: \n2019 JUNO Nominee\, 2017 JUNO Winner\, 2015 JUNO Winner \n“Easily in the top echelon of jazz vocalists anywhere in the world today.” \nDavid Braid\, JUNO-winning pianist and Gemini-winning composer \n“If the expression ‘the art of interpretation’ has ever applied\, then it does here. \nExpressiveness\, paired with a voice that is nuanced with top notch jazz inflections\, \ngives us a vocalist that ranks among the greatest young chanteuse of our time.“ \n– Volker Doberstein\, tonart magazine\, Germany \nWhen the late great saxophonist Yusef Lateef identified Diana Panton as “a heart singer” and legendary jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan enthused\, “[Diana]’s so soulful\, I know she means every word she sings\,” they helped highlight some of the special interpretative gifts required to create the raw emotive work that is blue. Panton’s tenth release is not a casual listen\, but a deep delve into the feelings that accompany the fragments of a broken relationship. The album is the third in a trilogy that began with the infatuation of first-time love on pink (2009 / Silver Disc Award Winner in Japan)\, followed by the passion of true love on RED (2015 JUNO Winner). \nIn testament to Panton’s grand vision for this endeavour\, the release dates of these albums were deliberately spread out over a decade so that the music could better reflect different stages in the narrative\, as well as showcase the maturation of Panton’s vocal artistry. \nSupported by stirring arrangements by jazz icon Don Thompson O.C. featuring an all-star musical cast consisting of Phil Dwyer C.M. (sax)\, Reg Schwager C.M. (guitar)\, Jim Vivian (bass)\, Thompson himself (piano) and the Penderecki String Quartet\, the quality of this blue recording should appeal to anyone who appreciates excellence in music Although it may seem counterintuitive to record an album of sad songs during a pandemic\, many people are dealing with the loss of a loved one\, a job or a relationship during these challenging times. As listeners seek out Panton’s music for its therapeutic effects\, it is hoped blue will bring solace to those coping with adversity. \n“For Diana\, her technique is rather a vehicle for expression\, so that her musical message reaches the listener. Her prior album\, pink had a theme of “new love”\, and the romance has moved to the next level in this new album RED. Diana’s expression doesn’t lose any of its grace in communicating these mature love songs and further reveals her purity. In addition\, the elegant sounding arrangements by Don Thompson\, who has supported Diana since her debut\, are truly superb.” – Jazz Japan \n“A rare and outstanding vocalist\, Diana Panton has the magical ability to draw the audience into listening attentively to her album track by track.” – Hong Kong’s Hi-Fi Review \n— \nShowcasing top Canadian and international musicians in jazz\, blues\, and improvised music. We are excited to welcome you back to our jazz lounge following a $2.5 million transformation. The new theatre has the same great stage\, with a new sound system and expanded seating capacity for you to enjoy world-class music in downtown Hamilton! \nAll proceeds from ticket sales support the An Instrument For Every Child (AIFEC) program. \nFor more information about the Hamilton Music Collective and An Instrument For Every Child visit: hamiltonmusiccollective.ca \nParking is available in the parking lots. SUMMARY:Junestone - Free Outdoor Concert (Eclectic Local)
DESCRIPTION:Brought to you by Lead Sponsor Incite Foundation for the Arts.\nSaturday August 3: Junestone\n \n  \nAll shows: Saturdays from 5:00 – 6:00pm \nGates Open at 4:00pm\, Rain or Shine. \nNo admission fee. All ages event. \nBeer garden \nOutdoor Stage at The HMC Centre for Performance and Education (The Gasworks\, 141 Park St N\, Hamilton) \nChairs Provided \n  \nThe series is co-curated by members of the HMC and the HPO with the goal to bring vibrant\, accessible musical performances to the downtown community. \nMade possible with the support of Ontario Creates. \n  \nAbout Junestone: \nFresh\, brilliant\, and funky as hell are just some of the ways startled audience members describe Junestone. It doesn’t take long for waves of iridescent guitar chords\, lush keyboard improvisations\, and the band’s wild and groovy vibe to sweep a room. As sincere as they are beguiling\, Junestone’s music is ear-catching\, memorable\, and at times delightfully outrageous. The band features Borys Franiczek on guitars\, Ian Aisling on keyboards\, Olivia Brown on bass and vocals\, and Justin McHugh on drums. \nJunestone’s music is psychedelic and often alludes to themes of self-realization\, assertiveness\, and vision. Smitten with jazz and rock as they are\, the band’s playing is routinely inspired by America’s Classical Music and 90’s alternative hits alike. Junestone is consistently influenced by music from everywhere\, but their song- writing ingenuity owes it all to American music legends like Charles Mingus\, James Brown\, and Erykah Badu. \nThe band began in the summer of 2018 when Olivia devised a band practice with three of her dear friends: Ian\, Justin\, and Borys. She had written three new songs and was ready to put them together. One of these songs\, “Who Cares”\, would be the band’s first single less than a year later. Since then\, the band has released seven singles. As time has passed\, writing has become a more collective endeavour. The band’s repertoire has now expanded to include dozens of originals. \nEach band member has studied jazz performance in the GTA. Borys is a graduate of York University’s Music program while Justin studied at Humber College. Both Ian and Olivia are graduates of Mohawk College’s music program. Ian currently works as a composer and has written music for two CBC documentaries\, The Last Guide and Road to Roxham. Justin is a regular performer on the Toronto music scene and has played with Brownman Ali and Juno award-winning musician Donné Roberts among others. Borys has attended California Brazil Camp and like Olivia\, works as a private music teacher in the Hamilton area. Olivia has attended the Banff Centre as a musician in residence (Winter 2018) and was nominated as an emerging artist for three consecutive years at the Hamilton Arts Awards (2017-2019).  \nJunestone’s performance experience includes T.U. Jazz Fest 2020 and Ontario Place Summer Live Music Festival 2021 and 2022. They have also played various events at Royal Botanical Gardens including SummerTide 2023 and both WinterTide 2022 and 2023. Upcoming performances for Junestone include Markham Village Music Festival 2023\, Hamilton’s Music on the Waterfront 2023\, and Markham’s DTM Music Fest in September.

Two new recordings for Musica Omnia will be released internationally in early 2023—a solo recording (Affetti Amorosi\, voice and theorbo) of Venetian arias from the 1620s\, and Capella Intima’s third recording\, featuring sacred Venetian motets for 1-6 voices with the Gallery Players of Niagara (Worship in a Time of Plague). \nBud is committed to the cultural enrichment of his local community of Hamilton\, Ontario. In a career spanning more than a half century\, Harold Danko has established himself as a distinguished pianist\, composer and band leader\, fortified by an impressive resume. Since 1980 he has earned ASCAP awards yearly for the value of his catalog of original compositions. Danko holds Professor Emeritus status at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester\, NY\, where he chaired the jazz studies program for eleven years. \nPianist/composer Harold Danko is best known for his long-term associations with an impressive list of jazz legends including Chet Baker\, Gerry Mulligan\, Thad Jones/Mel Lewis\, Lee Konitz and Woody Herman. Beginning his piano studies at the age of five\, Harold became serious about pursuing a career in jazz at the age of fifteen when he commenced studies with Gene Rush in Youngstown\, Ohio. After graduation from Youngstown State University and a stint in the Army band\, Harold landed the piano chair in Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd\, which launched his career as a much sought after jazz musician. He also developed a reputation as a respected jazz educator and served on the faculties of the Manhattan School of Music\, the New School/Mannes\, and Hartt College. \nHe has performed at major jazz venues throughout the world as well as on recordings\, television and video. As a band leader he has been featured in Lincoln Center’s “Meet the Artist” series\, Washington (DC) Performing Arts Society series at J.F.K. Center\, the Rochester International Jazz Festival\, and numerous jazz festivals both in the USA and abroad. In 1995 he was awarded an NEA Fellowship to perform his own works in a series of concerts in New York City. Throughout the 90s Harold performed with and composed for his own quartet with Rich Perry (tenor saxophone)\, Scott Colley (bass) and Jeff Hirshfield (drums) and more recently a trio with Hirshfield and Michael Formanek (bass) with whom he has recorded a series of highly acclaimed CDs on the SteepleChase label. For more than two decades\, Harold has won ASCAP awards\, based on “the unique prestige value of [his] catalogue of original compositions.” \nHe accepted an appointment from the Eastman School of Music in 1998 and now chairs the Jazz and Contemporary Media department. He teaches jazz piano\, directs the Jazz Performance Workshops\, and heads the Eastman Jazz Trio\, whose first CD was released in 2003. In addition to his own educational video\, Jazz Keyboard Techniques\, available only in Brazil\, he can be seen and heard on video performances with Gerry Mulligan\, Chet Baker\, and Lee Konitz. Harold’s featured column\, “Solo Piano”\, appeared in Keyboard Magazine for more than five years\, and his keyboard improvisation method\, the Illustrated Keyboard Series\, is a widely used reference. \nHis latest CDs\, released over the last three years on the SteepleChase label\, “Spring Garden”\, “Rite Notes”\, and “Trillium” are all inspired by Igor Stravinsky. \n“These recordings document important steps in my continuing exploration of Stravinsky’s music for purposes of composition and improvisation – a harvest growing directly from the Rite of Spring and other related works. In live performances the eighteen pieces developed from my studies serve as springboards for further investigation and improvisation. My post-production work on the recordings sparked greater interest in finding even more content to draw on from Stravinsky’s scores\, and the pieces have evolved into a kind of suite for solo piano incorporating details that had to be left out of the recordings. I premiered an abbreviated version in 2020 at my Leap Year concert on February 29 in East Rochester and longer versions later at the Bop Shop and Rochester International Jazz Festival.” \n— \nJoin Hamilton Music Collective for our 10th anniversary jazz concert series\, showcasing top Canadian and international musicians in jazz\, blues\, and improvised music. Find them in the Hamilton Farmer’s Market. \nAbout Mandy Lagan \nReimagining material from two of the most influential composers of our time\, Canadian vocalist Mandy Lagan returns by popular demand to celebrate the song books of Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell. Joined by her seven-piece band Origins\, Lagan is “no mere jazz vocalist” (CBC Radio). Lagan “rises to the challenge of honouring Mitchell’s legacy…” with her ambitious project The Joni Book\, heralded as one of the top 20 CDs of 2018 by JAZZ.FM91. \nSinger-composer-arranger-band leader\, Mandy Lagan created the Origins Ensemble with the mandate of using pre-existing artistic work and redefining it through a musical\, creative process. \nIn 2005 Ms. Lagan embarked on a project of creating songs using poetry from Robert Louis Stevenson’s “A Child’s Garden of Verses”. Verses was the first project of this nature. \nVerses was a very personal project for Ms. Lagan. “A Child’s Garden of Verses” has been appreciated and loved by her family for three generations. Verses is an extraordinary collection of songs that took years to create as she worked closely with David Occhipinti\, Joe Lagan\, Nancy Walker\, Carl Horton\, Kevin Turcotte\, Blair Mackay\, Andrew Downing and Blair Mackay. \nThe Joni Book\, also a project very close to the heart\, Mandy assembled the Origins ensemble once again to help her to realize the arrangements she imagined for some of her favourite Joni Mitchell songs. Andrew Downing\, Blair Mackay\, and Kevin Turcotte continue to contribute to the Origins projects along with newcomers Dave Restivo\, Ewen Farncombe\, Ted Quinlan and Jim Vivian. “The Joni Book” was heralded as one of the top 20 CDs of 2018 by Jazz FM 91\, where it receives regular airplay. It has also been featured on CBC Radio’s “Jazz with Laila Biali”. The press has praised Mandy’s imaginative arrangements\, and her earnest\, stunning vocals. She has truly made these songs her own\, while honouring the stories\, melodies and harmonies that make Joni’s music so powerful. The result is a wonderfully mature collection of playful and creative arrangements that clearly come straight from the heart. \nTHE PAUL SIMON PROJECT is the most recent endeavour for Mandy and her band\, ORIGINS.The band consists of some of Canada’s finest jazz musicians\, Ewen Farncombe-piano\, Ted Quinlan-guitars\, Kevin Turcotte-trumpet\, Matt Lagan-sax\, Andrew Downing-cello\, Jim Vivian-bass\, and Blair Mackay-percussion/drums. Once again Mandy and her band members are reimagining material from one of the most influential composers of our time\, bringing their own unique flavour and approach to these iconic songs from The Paul Simon Songbook. This will be the 5th recording project under the leadership of Ms. Lagan. \nMandy began taking herself seriously as a singer in 1990 when she moved from Hamilton to Toronto and formed a band in order to play songs of Joni Mitchell’s as well as her own writing. In 2002 she released her first CD\, “I Thought About You”\, a collection of jazz standards and two originals. In 2003 she released her second CD\, “You See Me”\, a selection of five jazz standards and five originals. In 2007 she released her third CD\, “Verses”\, a collection of Robert Louis Stevenson’s poetry which she collaboratively set to music. The “Verses” project awarded her financial support from the Canada Council for the Arts and The Ontario Arts Council. \nAfter 30 years in Toronto Mandy has returned to Hamilton where she continues her teaching\, writing\, recording and performing. \n“Mandy’s new recording the Joni Book\, is one of the most successful takes on Joni’s music I’ve heard. Great arrangements that keep the integrity of Joni’s tunes but makes them sound fresh and new. Also the laid-back and confident vocal approach from Mandy that makes this recording very strong.” \nBrad Barker – JAZZ FM 91.1 \n“Folksinger was too limiting a term to describe Joni Mitchell\, just as Mandy Lagan\, in pushing the boundaries in new and original ways\, is no mere jazz vocalist. This combination makes Lagan’s project “The Joni Book” a must-listen — make that “must” experience – for music fans from both schools.” \nMark Rheaume – CBC Radio \n“Lagan rises to the challenge of honouring Mitchell’s legacy…. [she] wraps her voice around the layers of lyrical meaning and shading embedded in these great songs.” \nBarry Livingston – WholeNote Magazine \n— \nJoin Hamilton Music Collective for our 10th anniversary jazz concert series\, showcasing top Canadian and international musicians in jazz\, blues\, and improvised music.
