ACHIEVEMENT BENEFITS EMPOWERMENT DEDICATION GROWTH FINANCES COMMITMENT STUDENT SPOTLIGHT As the An Instrument For Every Child program continues to grow, our team is honoured to watch our students grow in the same way. Brothers Jayden and River have been taking free instrumental lessons through the Boys and Girls Club for the past three years on percussion and violin, respectively. Their mother Heather has seen them advance not only in their musicianship, but also in their life skills. “It’s definitely helped them with their confidence. It helped my oldest with his social skills for sure, and it’s given them an appreciation for collaboration,” says Heather. Some of the changes she’s witnessed in her sons are more immediate. “When they’re playing, they tend to become more focused. If they’re in a frazzled mood or a bad mood, that often changes by the end of a 30 minute practice. Their understanding of music has really helped them open up to the arts,” she remarks. Since first starting on their respective instruments, the boys have become part of the AIFEC Orchestra, and Jayden now plays drums in the newest Jambassador band The Rocktonauts. “What’s your favorite part about playing your instrument?” Jayden: River: “Do you think you’ll keep playing your instrument for a long time?” River: “Have you guys ever played together?” River: “Do you have any plans to pick up other instruments?” Jayden: River: “I like it because it’s fun. I’ve always wanted to do percussion and I’ve actually really liked it, so I moved on and took full on drums.” “My favorite part about playing the violin is probably because it’s complicated.” “I think I will.” “Yeah, we played together on stage and we practice together sometimes.” “I think just drums for now because drums is the one I like.” “Saxophone. 100% the saxophone.” RIVER JAYDEN
