Guest Musicians

Throughout the school year, musicians are invited into our Grade 1 classrooms as guest performers. These musicians allow the students to see real world examples of musical instruments before they begin their private lessons. We would like to acknowledge the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and their generous supply of guests over the years.

Interested in being a Guest Musician? The grade 1 students of AIFEC want to meet you!

We are currently looking for inspiring musicians to visit our classrooms to share their love of music with a group of adoring children. Tell our students all about your instrument and the fun ways you play it!

Learning about these instruments in Grade 1 is important since it helps the kids make an informed decision about which they would like to start studying with AIFEC in Grade 2. The 30 minutes that you spend in class with our students will contribute to a life-time of involvement with music.

This opportunity is open to all musicians! This is a great opportunity for students seeking volunteer hours, or those interested in music education. We ask that you provide a short introduction to your instrument including a brief explanation of its history, a few short pieces that children would enjoy, and some kind of “hands-on” playing demonstration.

A small honorarium is provided for each classroom visit. Guests are invited to present in one or multiple classrooms across our partner schools.

Teaching Assistants

With over 70 private lessons lead by AIFEC instructors each week at elementary schools, community centres, and the Boys and Girls Club, we are often in need of teaching assistants in the classroom. Our teachers give lessons to students in grades 2 – 4, in small groups of 4 to 6 children.

The instruments we teach include:

  • Guitar
  • Ukulele
  • Violin
  • Drums
  • Piano
  • Percussion
  • Trumpet
  • Trombone
  • Flute

Teaching assistants volunteer directly with a skilled AIFEC instructor in a weekly 40 minute class. This is a great opportunity for those interested in working in a school environment, exploring music education, or working alongside a qualified music teacher. Assistants should have some basic musical knowledge (how to produce a sound on a given instrument, hold a guitar properly, clap written rhythms, and read notes A – G for example), and be able to commit to volunteering for the entire school year ideally.
