When the late great saxophonist Yusef Lateef identified Diana Panton as “a heart singer” and legendary jazz vocalist Sheila Jordan enthused, “[Diana]’s so soulful, I know she means every word she sings,” they helped highlight some of the special interpretative gifts required to create the raw emotive work that is blue. Panton’s tenth release is not a casual listen, but a deep delve into the feelings that accompany the fragments of a broken relationship. The album is the third in a trilogy that began with the infatuation of first-time love on pink (2009 / Silver Disc Award Winner in Japan), followed by the passion of true love on RED (2015 JUNO Winner).

In testament to Panton’s grand vision for this endeavour, the release dates of these albums were deliberately spread out over a decade so that the music could better reflect different stages in the narrative, as well as showcase the maturation of Panton’s vocal artistry.

Supported by stirring arrangements by jazz icon Don Thompson O.C. featuring an all-star musical cast consisting of Phil Dwyer C.M. (sax), Reg Schwager C.M. (guitar), Jim Vivian (bass), Thompson himself (piano) and the Penderecki String Quartet, the quality of this blue recording should appeal to anyone who appreciates excellence in music Although it may seem counterintuitive to record an album of sad songs during a pandemic, many people are dealing with the loss of a loved one, a job or a relationship during these challenging times. As listeners seek out Panton’s music for its therapeutic effects, it is hoped blue will bring solace to those coping with adversity.
