March Break Music Tech Week
March 12 - 15 2024
Affordable hands-on workshops for youth interested in music technology, recording and production.

Looking for something to do over March Break? Enter HMC’s Soundhaus Studios and learn from local music makers. Learn the basics of DJing, and the top tools to make music at home. Co-write a song or make a beat from scratch with professional songwriters and producers, and get a taste of the Musical Futures Production Program from HMC.

Workshops are 60-90 minutes in length and for ages 8 – 18. No experience necessary!

9-10 spots available per workshop.

Location: The HMC Centre for Performance and Education at The Gasworks (141 Park Street North, downtown Hamilton)

Cost: $15 per workshop

Join producer Matt King as he breaks down how to flip samples and program hip-hop beats using Ableton Live.


Intro to Ableton Live

Sasha Szlafarski | Tuesday March 12 | 1:00 – 2:30pm | Ages 13 – 18

Learn the basics of the industry-standard software Ableton Live in this crash course. Start writing original beats, combine loops, and record music of any style using computers, microphones and MIDI keyboard controllers.


Intro to DJing & Turntables (13+)

DJ Donna Lovejoy | Tuesday March 12 | 3:30 – 5:00 pm | Ages 13 – 18

Learn the basic art of DJing with DJ Donna Lovejoy. During this relaxed workshop presentation, aspiring DJs will have the chance to try their hand at mixing and blending tracks using the traditional 2-turntable and mixer set-up!


How to Collaborate & Write Great Songs

Join producer Matt King (Chance the Rapper, Big Sean, EST Gee) and songwriter Melissa Dutch as they demonstrate tips and tricks to collaborate with others and write a great song. Experience the process and write lyrics and melodies together!


From Song Idea to Produced Track

Join producer Matt King and songwriter Melissa Dutch as they show how to record a high quality track using a microphone, midi instruments and your own computer! Learn how to record and layer vocals, virtual instruments and effects to turn your song idea into a finished track.
